English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Who are these courses for? ESOL courses at BEC are for adults who don’t have English as their first language and who are living permanently in the UK. Applicants need to be eligible for LSC funding and courses are free for learners on income-based benefits. There is a free creche available for ESOL learners at BEC who have children aged 6 months to 4 years.

How long are the courses? The courses are around 10 weeks long and around 6 hours a week. Learners are usually offered the opportunity to continue after the 10 weeks if they want to. Learners can enrol on an ESOL course at anytime. Courses run from September to July with exams in December, March and July. Courses: all of our ESOL courses lead to the Skills for Life ESOL qualifications and help learners prepare for work. They also include a Citizenship element and our Skills for Life qualifications at E1-E3 can be used to fulfil the Home Office’s language requirements for Naturalisation or Indefinite Leave to Remain. (See ESOL course descriptions: Entry 2; Entry 3; Level 1; Level + Job Seeking Skills); Level 2;

How do we work? ESOL classes are group taught and have between 10 and 14 learners. We work on speaking, listening, reading, writing (including spelling) and grammar. We use a range of activities and teaching methods, including group and pair work. We tailor our teaching to the learners and our classes are stimulating, fun and purposeful. All classes work towards the Skills for Life ESOL qualifications and learners are encouraged to enter for these when they are ready.

What do people say about ESOL at BEC? ‘I can go to the doctor’s on my own now. I don’t need an interpreter. This is really important to me’ (Maryam). ‘I have increased my confidence. I can speak to my children’s teachers and help my children with their homework’ (Farhad). ‘Now that I have passed the Speaking and Listening exam, I can apply for British Citizenship’ (Jija).

Cost: ESOL classes cost £80 for 6 hours a week for 10 weeks (1 term); check eligibility and fees.

Where do the courses take place? BEC Rotherhithe Library.

How do I enrol? Enrolment is by appointment only. Please call 020-7394-6836 to book an assessment. For general enquiries, email: admin@beceducation.co.uk
