English/Literacy

How long do courses last for? 6 hours a week for 1 – 3 terms (about 10 weeks a term)

Who are they for? These classes are for you if you would like to develop your skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. We will ask you to do an assessment to help us decide which of our classes is best for you. You must be eligible for LSC funding to do these courses.

Courses: Entry Level Workshops (O:\Tutors&Courses\courses\course outlines\LitEng\Entry Lit 07 08.doc), Level 1and 2 Workshops (O:\Tutors&Courses\courses\course outlines\LitEng\Levels 1 and 2 07 08.doc); English for Childcare; Working with Children Level 1 (NCFE).

How do we work? You will join a workshop that suits your level. You can improve your reading, writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation as well as speaking and listening skills. You will work on different types of texts – for example: letters, newspapers, books. You can work on computers and use internet resources. Your tutor will help you to find a way of learning that suits you best and you will work towards an OCR Entry Level Certificate in Adult Literacy.

Courses run between September and June and you can enrol at anytime. We offer a free creche for children aged 6 months and over for daytime courses between 10 and 3 pm.

What do people say about literacy at BEC? “I have enjoyed every session this year.” “I enjoy everything and I like homework. Small classes are really good. When I come here I’m really, really happy.” “The teaching is excellent!”

Cost: you pay a registration fee of £5 each term.
